Ever since the period of President Jimmy Carter and the oil crisis in the 1970s, the U.S has tirelessly worked hard to become energy independent. However, with constant oil crises and surge in prices, the U.S will never obtain the freedom of energy independence if it continues depending mainly on fossil fuels to generate energy. A large part of the American population feels that the government should focus on developing fossil fuel sources. However, as the shift to clean and renewable energy gains momentum, the U.S now experiences a severe problem of depending much on China for materials needed to clean renewable energy systems.
Research indicates that China provides 80% of Rare Earth Elements (REE) require making renewable structures such as windmills, cell phones, electric motor batteries, national intelligence items, medical items, among others.
Reliance on China
In the past two years, the Interior Development produced a list of thirty-five classified minerals it termed as ‘ fundamental’ to the U.S economy. The U.S economy depends mainly on shipments from China for 14 of these classified minerals. Those figures were accurate, nothing fabricated.
In 2018, the U.S excavated 18,000 metric tons of its rare piles of earth and 26,000 metric tons last year. The Geological Survey affirmed that the household’s generation of minerals relies on shipments. Thirty years ago, the U.S was the leading producer of such earth minerals, but the rain started to beat the U. S and slipped down to position seven.
The vice-like grip supply chain of China on the U.S in supplying of Rare Earth Metals will be transparent only if Joe Biden, American Presidential candidate steps into the office and implements his strategy of $5 trillion on renewable energy.
Joe Biden proposed a strategy of $5 trillion climate budget of ensuring Americans achieved 2050 net carbon emission. Joe Biden made a proposal of a staggering $1.7 trillion in government expenditure in attaining the goal by 2030. Bidens asserted that taxed paid by payers will be compensated by repealing the provided tax Bonanza given by President Donald Trump to the U. S organizations. He also plans on reducing costs on fossil fuels.
Becoming self- sufficient.
Since China is the leading supplier of REE globally, the U.S will get no opportunity to ramp up its shipment of those minerals from the Middle Kingdom. Such race is not easy to finish because many nations are on the same lane of shifting from fossils fuel.
